Most people think that they are good drivers, regardless of the reality. Now, just call it a hunch, but there have to be at least some people out there who don't quite make the grade as "good" drivers. You know who we are talking about here. The ones who text while driving, eat while they are driving, put their make-up on while driving and the ones who almost run you over in grocery store parking lots. These people are at the very least unsafe drivers. But if you asked them, they would no doubt tell you all the problems on the roads are other people's fault.

Since there is absolutely no way an insurance company could actually get driver's to admit that they aren't very good drivers they have to analyze you in a different manner. How an auto insurance carrier judges you is based on whether or not you have any traffic violations and if you have any accidents on your record.

Granted, everyone has an off day, and sometimes it is just random luck that you got that speeding ticket for going 8 miles per hour over the speed limit. What good drivers should do if they are unfortunate enough to get a speeding ticket is enroll in their home states' traffic school programs so that the ticket won't show up on their record. Trust me; I forgot to finish my traffic school after a recent speeding stop, and I regret it now.

So why is it okay to get a ticket in your insurer's eyes if you went to traffic school? Well, everyone needs a refresher course on the rules of the road from time to time, and your car insurance carrier understands that. A person who is responsible and safe will spend an entire Saturday repaying their proverbial debt to society.

Now, most insurance providers offer their customers a "Good Driver Discount" or "Safe Driver Discount," and there is little or no difference between the two. It just means you have a clean accident and traffic violation record and that the insurer therefore trusts you more. You can, however, have parking tickets, but if you don't pay the corresponding fines that will definitely cause a problem.

So while you may think you are a terrific driver, you just might not be ready for the NASCAR circuit. The best advice for you if you want a safe driver discount is to not let yourself be distracted behind the wheel of a car. Beyond that, it's pretty much a game of luck and chance.
